Rare Flint Lock Tinder Lighter

Rare brass and steel flint lock tinder lighter with carved Walnut made in the 1780s of either Dutch or English origin. This lighter was utilized in the 18th century before the invention of matches to produce a spark from the steel flintlock which lit tinder located in the brass storage area. The ignited tinder would then in turn be used to light candles displayed in candleholders. Please note of wear consistent with antique age and daily use including a chip to the walnut handle. The candleholder has been reattached in the past with old solder.
