Circa early 19th century sterling silver vinaigrette box made in Birmingham, England. The interior is fitted with a small hinged screen decorated with a swan motif framed by scrolled foliage. This screen is used to securely enclose a small piece of fabric or sponge soaked in perfume for the wearer to discretely mask unpleasant smells during travel. The exterior lid is uniquely decorated with a central crest motif, diamond shaped motifs, and thin scrolled trim.
